We have All the Good Books

Many believe our babies are able to hear us read when they are within the womb. They should be hearing us.  Then reading makes our children smarter as they grow in this World.  The gifts of READING are proven to be fundamentally beneficial in all areas of life.

We learn so much from being Read To, Reading, and then in our own abilities to write and share, and communicate.

I gave up on reading when I was very young but realized the mistake I made when I was around 28 yrs. The first thing I did was to read the old testament bible 2 times then the new testament bible 7 times so I KNEW what it said rather than take someone’s word for it. I then went on to read books and books about every subject I could think of. Harry S Trueman, a US president, was an incredibly avid reader.

Why Books are Important?

From time to time people have wondered why reading is important. There seems so many other things to do with one’s time. Reading is important for a variety feature-readslikeabookof reasons. We will look at some of those fundamental reasons below, but it is important to realize that struggling with vital reading skills in not a sign of low intelligence. For example, John Corcoran, who wrote The Teacher Who Couldn’t Read, is a very intelligent man. He graduated from High School and College, became a popular High School teacher and later a successful businessman all without being able to read. Many highly intelligent people have struggled with reading although, when properly taught, most people can learn to read easily and quickly.

A person should read Mr. Corcoran’s story to get the feeling of shame, loneliness and fear that he experienced before he learned to read. He was able to succeed in spite of this major handicap because he was a man of intelligence and lots of determination. Learning to read made his life so much more enjoyable !

Reading is Important

Reading is also a  fundamental requirement to survive in any city. There are many adults who cannot read well enough to understand the instructions on a medicine bottle. What a scary thought  –  especially for the children around them !. Filling out paperwork to apply for a job becomes impossible without help. Not being able to read road signs is downright dangerous. Even following a map becomes a chore. Day-to-day activities that are simple for most of us become activities of frustration and fear for those who cannot read.

Reading is a vital skill one needs at a good job. Just about all good paying jobs require good reading and writing skills. There are reports and memos which must be read and responded to. Poor reading skills increase the amount of time it takes to absorb and react in the workplace. A person simply is limited to what they can accomplish in any job without good reading skills. My last job was at a computer dept. There was NO WAY I could have survived that job even for a day without decent reading skills. I would have to read like 25 e-mails every day to keep up on all the changes.

Knowledge is a good Defense

Reading is important because it develops the mind. The mind needs exercise just like any muscle. Understanding the written word is a huge way the mind grows in its ability. The original reason for the written word was to learn and think.  Using the written word then was used as a weapon and to communicate. An astute reader can defend themselves much better.

Why is reading important? We can discover new things. There is so much information out there. Books, magazines and even the Internet are great learning tools but you have to have the ability to read. In this day and age a person must continually educate themselves and in doing so doors will open. We live at a time of endless opportunities. Reading brings these new opportunities right in front of us.good books

Reading Develops The Imagination

Reading develops the imagination.  Imagination can take a person anywhere in the world…or even out of it! You can be a prince,a princess,or even travel to another planet.… The possibilities are endless. Remember reading helps a person learn how to think better ands so goes imagination. Non-readers can never experience these joys at the same magnitude.

In line with the above, reading develops the creative side of people. Creating comes from imagining. All great ideas come from the genius of creativity. Songwriting, engineering, technology, are just a few examples.

Reading builds Self Esteem

Reading is fundamental in developing a good self-image. Poor readers usually  have low opinions of their abilties and of themselves. Many times they feel as if the world is against them. They feel isolated [everybody else can read – which isn’t true] depression can surface.  Without a good self-image poor readers quite often give up much sooner than other people.

Why is reading important? Let’s keep going… Good reading skills, especially in a phonics reading program, improve spelling. As students learn to sound out letters and words, spelling comes easier. Also, reading helps to expand the vocabulary. Reading new words puts them in their mind for later use. Seeing how words are used in different contexts can give a better understanding of the word usage and definitions than the cold facts of a dictionary.

Reading helps develope Writing skills

“The pen is mightier than the sword.” Ideas generated from reading and written down have changed everyone’s destiny for better of for worse. Ideas are researched so we can build on the good ideas while embracing the bad ideas for what they are. The flow of ideas need to be researched to build on the good ideas for better living and expose the bad ideas before they bring destruction. Only by reading can we be armed in this never-ending, life-and-death struggle.

The fact of the power of written ideas communicated through reading can be used as a weapon. This is a reason why some governments oppose free speech and honest communication. Illiterate people are easier to control and manipulate. There are many stories throughout history about how governments would burn all the books. The less knowledge a person has the easier they are controlled.  Without books we the people must rely more on what they are told. There is a good possibility that this is one of the main reasons phonics was removed from the schools about 100 years ago.

Reading helps to develope your mind

Finally, why is reading important? Reading is important because words – spoken and written – are the building blocks of life. You are, right now, the result of words that you have heard or read AND believed about yourself. What you become in the future will depend on the words you believe about yourself now. People, families, relationships, and even nations are built from words. Think about it.

According to Jonathan Kozol in “Illiterate America,” quoted in “The Teacher Who Couldn’t Read,’” the three main reasons people give for wanting to read are:

good books1. To read the Bible,
2. To read books and newspapers, and
3. To help their children.

I think everyone can conclude that reading is a vital skill! Reading Strategies are also a part of learning to read.

Thank you Glenn – and I totally agree.

Reading Books allow for so much more of the story, the plots, and more about the personal side of the characters than you will see in a movie.  If you love a story on the big screen, you’ll more than love reading the book the movie was produced from and get more into it.

good booksDo you travel, drive or fly a lot – you should Read, but at times AUDIO BOOKS are a great addition to your personal growth.  They allow you to take in a book – and in many cases as read to you.  Being read too is a great way to soak in a story, to learn history, to gain knowledge.  And it’s all available on our site (that we continually update).

There is always a way to get a good book in… and you deserve it!
